Fulcrum Equity Partners - Generating Superior Investment Returns
Frank Dalton and Jeffrey Muir, founders of Fulcrum Equity Partners, generate top quartile returns by providing expansion capital to rapidly growing companies. Fulcrum Equity Partners will be present at the upcoming
IFG Wealth Management Forum 2011.
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Fulcrum Equity Partners with their first fund is projected to generate more than a 30% IRR for investors. “Our target market is underserved. Most funds are large and not interested in investing more modest amounts of growth capital,” says Frank Dalton, Partner at Fulcrum Equity Partners. “There is a significant capital gap.”
Ahead of the IFG Wealth Management Forum 2011 on Amelia Island, Florida, October 24-25, Dalton and Muir talked about this underserved market where investors can realize significant returns and their firm’s criteria for selecting investment opportunities.
IFG - How is your investment philosophy unique?
Jeffrey Muir - We focus on smaller, fast growing companies that require initial investments of $1-5 million. Banks are not aggressive in lending them capital, many funds are not interested in smaller companies and most want to deploy much larger amounts of capital, yet many companies still hold great potential and need to raise money to fund their growth. We are able to take advantage of the opportunities in this underserved market.
IFG - What is the risk/return profile of such investments?
Frank Dalton - The stock market and traditional investment products are going to generate fairly low returns over the next few years. Our target IRR is 25% annualized net to investors, and our first fund will exceed that.
We believe that our investment strategy and disciplined investment process can generate superior returns on relatively modest risk.
Jeffrey Muir - By deploying relatively smaller amounts of capital, we can still generate significant returns at more modest exit values. It is easier to exit such investments successfully, if you do not need to sell the company for a huge amount of money. The probability for multiple exit partners is also much greater, and management is able to retain meaningful ownership.
IFG - How do you select the companies worthy of expansion capital?
Jeffrey Muir - We have a very disciplined investment process and focused investment criteria. We map all our opportunities against seven very specific criteria and do extensive due diligence. Two of our more important criteria are the management team and the growth prospects of the company.
We look for experience, passion and leadership skills, people who have been successful and know their market. We look for companies growing over 20% a year or have the potential to grow rapidly with the funds we are investing.
Frank Dalton - It is also important for these companies to have reasonable valuation expectations. In our space, companies have limited options, and we are able to structure very attractive deals at below market valuations.
Jeffrey Muir - The market segments we consider attractive are healthcare, information technology, technology enabled operating companies and business services. We are well connected in the deal flow, have significant operating experience and know these areas well, so we can add a lot of value.
